Plagiarism Detection and Prevention

Harzing (2002) writes that one of the defining features of academic writing ‘is the care that is taken to substantiate claims and arguments, often by referring to other literature in the field’ (p127). Individuals depend on academic papers being ‘reliable source[s] of information’, so the credibility of academia relies on the academic integrity of its contributors. Academic arguments must be supported by relevant material and research, and the materials used to support arguments must be properly referenced to maintain a work’s integrity.

In my time working in online education and observing the study habits of online students from all around the world I have seen first-hand the prevalence of poor conduct in online classrooms with regard to academic integrity. A startlingly high number of students have had their studies arrested or derailed due to poor academic rigour when it comes to referencing and plagiarism. Here I consider how plagiarism and cheating can be detected, how assessment can be designed to thwart academic dishonesty and what steps can be taken to otherwise prevent plagiarism from occurring in online study environments.

Plagiarism can be detected in two ways: through manual means and through software detection.  For manual detection, Harris (2004) advocates an approach he calls ‘looking for clues’. This approach involves looking for specific patterns of written work that can typically indicate that plagiarism or copy/pasting has taken place. Harris suggests that a grader be vigilant towards ‘inconsistent citation styles, lack of citations in long passages, awkward formatting, use of dated language, use of difficult vocabulary and terminology, and irregularities of diction and style’ (summarised in Jocoy and DiBiase, 2006, p8). Plagiarism can also be detected using plagiarism software like Turnitin.com. Turnitin.com is an example of educational technology that has the function of comparing submitted work with other student submissions and academic work from all around the world (what Turnitin.com call ‘the world’s largest academic database’).  By checking the originality report that plagiarism detectors like Turnitin.com use we can see what sections of a submitted work should be cited and referenced correctly, and then take action for any fragments that fall short of integrity expectations.

The way assessments are designed can also help prevent academic dishonesty in an online class. Students can ideally be challenged with online assignments that encourage collaboration in the correct manner. Dr. Keith Pratt, for example, advocates designing assessment that mirrors real-life situations. In the modern, technologically advanced world students do not work in isolation from sources and assistance (Laureate, 2010). Laptops, smartphones and other mobile devices make collaboration in problem-solving a very simple solution for real-life tests. Pratt explains that he creates difficult exams and assignments and promotes conference between students while working on these. This can take away some of the reticence students might feel when referencing numerous other sources in their work, but there is still the issue of student awareness towards correct academic conduct that needs to be addressed.

The single most stubborn roadblock standing in the way of proper use of citing and referencing in academic environments is the fact that ‘many learners don’t consider copying and pasting from websites as plagiarism’ (ibid). One of the most effective ways of greatly reducing instances of plagiarism in online classrooms is education on the topic of academic integrity.  Jocoy and DiBiase (2006) cite research that indicates students who ‘received no explicit plagiarism instruction plagiarized twice as often as those who participated in active instructional activities such as class discussions of definitions of plagiarism, review of Turnitin.com plagiarism reports, and exercises requiring students to identify instances of plagiarism in example essays’ (p5). Students need to be guided in the correct practices of academic writing. It can be a useful exercise to even explain to students that a similarity score of 100% in your Turnitin.com submission (indicating that nothing you have written is original work) does not necessarily mean you have plagiarised your work. If you have corrected cited and referenced your entire paper you might get a very poor grade for lack of original thought, but you will not be punished for cheating. I am a strong believer in these preparations for proper academic referencing skills being imparted on students before the beginning of their online studies during some sort of orientation programme.

By combining an awareness on how to detect plagiarism when it happens with an effort to avoid occurrences in the first place by designing assignments in a certain way and, in particular, educating students on the importance of citations, the threat of plagiarism to academic credibility can be reduced substantially.

Impact of Technology and Multimedia

Technology and multimedia are important components of any online study experience. Technology and multimedia have large impact on online learning environments because of how they can be used to bridge the separation between teachers and students. For any sort of distance learning to take place it is necessary, by definition, that ‘interactive telecommunications systems are used to connect learners, resources, and instructors’ (Simonson et al., 2012, p.32). Technology and multimedia are the connectors for online education.

I believe the most important consideration for an online instructor before implementing technology in a course should always be the course objectives. Before deciding to utilise a certain type of technology or tool in class, the instructor should be asking themselves ‘Is this the best way for me to reach the stated course objective of this class?’.  Dr. Rena Paloff describes this focus on using relevant technology as the ‘judicious use of technology’ (Laureate, 2010). Conrad and Donaldson (2011) reinforce this point in saying that ‘it is the learning outcome that must be the focus of the activity, not the technological tool used to implement the activity’ (p18).

Paloff and Pratt also make an important point in their video presentation when they discuss the necessity of considering how different technologies might be experienced differently by different students (Laureate, 2010). Pratt gives an example of slow dial-up internet being a potential issue for students when content-rich multimedia is made available. Struggling with slow download speeds is something that can severely hamper student enjoyment and ease of accessibility for students. In the context of online study, where the potential exists for very international classrooms, it might be important to consider whether or not all prospective students for c lass will be studying from regions and countries with effective enough network access to allow full participation in class.

For me, the area of technology and multimedia that I am most excited about in relation to online learning an area we have looked at in class recently: gaming. I believe that games and simulations can be fantastic technology tools for engaging students and enhancing their learning experience. I am particularly interested in the idea of games that are popular in mainstream entertainment, and not just in education, being used to further education and learning. The level of exposure that people of all ages have nowadays to video games and simulations means that there is potential to tap into a wide market and to truly engage students in enjoyable learning experiences.

Setting Up an Online Learning Experience

Last week I looked at the importance of establishing a positive learning community in an online classroom. We looked at how a community can be encouraged and why having such a learning community spirit is so crucial to the effectiveness of online studies. This week I will be taking a look at what is required from the instructor at the beginning of a study course outside of activities that promote a learning community. I have selected three different elements it is important to focus on in the early stages of teaching an online course.

  1. Understand the Technology

By definition, students and instructors studying online will need to use technology to take part in their online classroom. Students will often look to their instructors for help with the technology they will need to utilise to be successful. Conrad and Donaldson (2011) mention that ‘making sure that all participants have the necessary skill level with the communication tools that will be necessary during the course’ is one of the biggest challenges instructors face in an online classroom (p38). It is important for students to learn how to use the tools in the online classroom, but it is perhaps even more critical that the instructor be able to use these tools expertly.

Dr. George Piskurich affirms that a key necessary quality a facilitator must have for online learning is to have a thorough understanding of the software they will use in the course; they need to know ‘what they can do with it, what the learners can do with it and how they need to work it’ so that the technology becomes ‘almost transparent’ (Laureate, n.d). If tools like discussions boards, wikis, video content etc. are to be successful in adding to the learning experience then the instructor will need to have a very good understanding of how each of the tools work so that they can do the main job that being an online instructor requires: facilitating learning.

I believe a second important consideration in mastering the tools available in the classroom is to add to the self-efficacy of online students. Learners who are self-confidence as they study generally hold high expectations of their performance in class. This, according to Wang (2008) ‘often means that learners participate more actively in learning and use certain learning strategies to achieve their objectives’ (p19). If students understand that, regardless of how challenging the technology tools might be, the instructor has an expert knowledge on their use an is always there to guide them this will be a great aid to their self-efficacy.

  1. Communicate Clear Expectations

Boettcher and Conrad (2011) suggest that it is a highly recommendable practice that instructors are clear with students on how communication will work in the classroom and how much time they are expected to spend on their studies each week (p40). Students studying online might not know what to expect from such a course for the first time, and ‘being clear as to how much effort and time will be required on a weekly basis keeps surprises to a minimum’ (ibid, 41).

It is also important that instructors are very clear on what is expected from students in each and every assignement set. Unlike in an online classroom instructors cannot take non-verbal clues from a class about how well an assignment questions is understood, so to ensure no misunderstandings occur it is crucial that assignment instructions and expectations are very explicit. Wang (2008) explains that being clear on expectations and explicitly referring back to these expectations in feedback is an important contributor to student motivation. To sustain student motivation an instructor is well served to ‘provide recognition of success’ where possible (Wang, 2008, 26), and being clear with students on where their work has met expectations is a great way of doing this.

  1. Be Aware that Different Students Have Different Needs

It goes without saying that not every student is the same. Some students will take to online learning very quickly, others will have a tougher time adjusting. It is important for instructors to realise that some students may need some extra help early in their online learning experience to acclimatise. Using ice-breakers and introduction posts to get an indication of student’s backgrounds in terms of culture, exposure to technology, age profile, whether they have studied online before etc. can be a good way of surmising which individuals may require that little bit of extra attention. To give an example of this, student introductions in the first week of class might suggest that some students are studying in language that is not their first language. In a study of online studies in Australia, D’Netto and Hannon (2007) found that, while non-native and native speaker of English were both equally happy with study outcomes overall, the non-native speakers responded ‘significantly’ less positively about their experiences with technology in the classroom (p426). A little bit of extra attention early in the studies when learning how to use the technology tools might make the learning experience easier for such students.

Online Learning Communities: Their Importance and their Development

Online learning can be a daunting challenge for many students. The traditional face-to-face mode of teaching is very effective for creating a connection between both instructors and students, and students and other students, due to their proximity and consequential immediacy. The very fact that in face-to-face learning environments instructors are in such close contact with their students ‘lessen[s] the psychological distance between themselves and their students, leading, directly or indirectly depending on the study, to greater learning’ (Swan, 2002, p.12).  It is a challenge for both developers of online studies and instructors in online classrooms to strive towards the creation of a similar sense of community. This sense of community between members of classrooms is important for the effectiveness of instruction.  Palloff and Pratt explain that if a student feels part of a learning community it increases their satisfaction with studying, it increases their perception of learning and they feel part of ‘something larger’ with more social pressure to succeed, making them more likely to persevere with their studies if any difficulties arise (Laureate, 2010).

Palloff and Pratt explain that to create an online community you need to have three elements: People, Purpose and Process. The people element is self-explanatory; of course, you can’t have a community without people to be a part of it. The people need to be gathered (digitally) for a specific purpose; it’s not just a chance coming together of online entities, it is people working together towards one goal. Finally, there needs to be a shared process for working towards the reason the people have gathered together for.  There needs to be a process by which learners can engage with one another. Classroom discussions within a Course Management System are an example of processes through which learning community creation can occur.

Once a sense of community has been formed, attention needs to be turned to how to maintain the learning community. Paloff and Pratt make it clear that everyone in the learning community has a responsibility for sustaining the community, both students and instructors. The instructor’s role cannot, however, be minimised. Anderson (2012) writes that one of the main functions of an instructor in an online classroom is the ‘critical task of facilitating discourse’ (p350); the instructor need to nurture and environment in which the learning community can grow. Continued interaction between students and instructors can help sustain a learning community where individuals can build a ‘sense of shared understanding, knowledge of one another and mutual support’ (Boettcher and Conrad, 2010, p104). The instructor is instrumental in these interactions because of their task in providing a ‘shelter and safe place’ for community interactions (ibid).

A key piece of learning to take away from a study of learning communities is the importance that a well-developed orientation course can play in facilitating new communities. Paloff and Pratt (Laureate, 2010) are both enthusiastic about the benefits a dedicated time for orientation can have. Students can get to know each other, can learn how to use the Course Management System correctly and get orientated to ‘online learning philosophy’. I believe that explaining to students how important being an active and contributing member of the learning community will be to their success in their studies could play a big role in hastening the rooting of a new community. Orientation can serve as a vehicle for educating students on the purpose behind interactions with their classmates online and the benefits they can take away from ‘becoming a part of something large’.

Course Reflection and the Perception of Online Education

Moller et al. (2008), in an article on e-learning in higher education, observed that ‘E-learning courses can carry a certain “stigma”’ (p68). In August 2010 the Society for Human Resource Management- ‘the world’s largest HR membership organization devoted to human resource management’- conducted a survey amongst Human Resource managers to investigate the common perceptions companies have towards online degree holders when considering them for employment. 49% of respondents affirmed that job candidates who achieved their qualifications online are viewed less favourably than their counterparts who have studied through traditional, face-to-face instruction. In addition, 16% of respondents were not sure (Society for Human Resource Management, 2010). It would appear that the ‘stigma’ Moller spoke of was borne out in these results. In this reflection on my studies of Distance Learning I will consider why society can tend to take an unfavourable view of online studies and what is happening that can change these prevailing sentiments.

One of the keystone principles of distance learning and, by extension, online learning, is Equivalency Theory. Equivalency theory posits that studies at a distance should not be identical to face-to-face education but that ‘equivalent outcomes… should be expected of each learner’ (Simonson et al. 2012, p. 52). For online education to be considered a mode of education worthy of respect in and of itself, and not merely as a poor alternative to traditional studies, ensuring that equivalent learning outcomes are achieved is vital. Simonson et al. (1999) explain that Equivalency Theory is ‘central to the widespread acceptance of distance education’ and if ‘equivalency is not what the public perceives, then distance education will continue to be peripheral to the field of education’. The survey by the SHRM cited in the above paragraph strongly suggests that, despite Equivalency theory being central to the development of online studies, and despite research suggesting that equivalency in learning outcomes is very much achievable through online learning (Lapsley et al., 2008; Webster and Lennon, 2007), there is a social perception that learning in online courses is not equivalently effective to traditional course studies.

There is, however, a positive trend developing in social perceptions towards online education. Allen and Seaman (2013), in a study tracking perceptions towards online studies in the US over a ten year period, demonstrate clear quantitative evidence that social perception of online education is becoming more positive with time. Although close to 25% of Chief Academic Officers at higher education institutes in the US felt online studies were inferior in some ways to face-to-face education, this percentage has almost halved since the surveys began in 2003 (p28). Allen and Seaman make one particularly fascinating (for the sake of this paper at least) observation from their data: ‘A consistent finding over the ten years of these reports is the strong positive relationship of academic leaders at institutions with online offerings also holding a more favourable opinion of the learning outcomes for online education’ (p29). This suggests that individual perceptions of online education are very much influenced by the level of exposure to online education that the particular individual has had. With the increasing popularity of MOOCs and the rise of the numbers of people who are studying or training through online learning it stands to reason that the level of acceptance of online studies will also continue to rise. It has been posited that distance education will soon reach a stage of critical mass, the stage where distance education will be ‘expected and respected’ at large; not just an alternative to traditional education, but an equal (Laureate Education, n.d). In conclusion, I believe that the ‘stigma’ Moller et al. mentioned being attached to online education persists, but it is on the wane. I believe the evidence points strongly to the fact that within the near future online education and training will achieve a point of saturation high enough to make its equivalence with traditional studies a generally accepted norm for this type of learning.

As an instructional designer of online studies, there is a constant responsibility to represent the very best of what online education can offer distance learning students as a viable alternative to traditional studies. Designers should make every effort to ensure that students studying online have the best learning experience possible, and just as importantly, the most equivalent experience possible. For example, although it has been well documented that interaction between students and instructors is critical for developing a meaningful learning community and promoting transformational learning in online learning (Murphy & Cifuentes, 2001; Schmidt and Gallegos, 2001) one of the oft-perceived weaknesses mentioned by potential students of online education relates to lack of interaction with instructors and isolation from classmates compared to studying face-to-face . Schmidt and Gallegos (2001) are very clear on how important interaction is for distance learning students: ‘When developing a distance delivery course, course designers must provide a way for students and instructors to interact’ (p5). Ensuring that such interaction is accounted for in online instruction is an example of how instructional designers can ensure that positive perceptions of online studies are fostered. The proliferation of people studying online and having positive experiences while doing so is a crucial step in online education reaching the ‘critical mass’ that Dr. Simonson referred to.

Personally, my ambitions for online education are focussed on the education sector. I believe that online education will reach the stage of ‘critical mass’ within the next decade, and at that point it will be incumbent on universities and institutions to embrace online education as an equal to their campus studies, or else face the prospect of being left behind by their competition. Once this stage is reached there will be a demand for workers with expertise specifically in distance and online education to ensure that equivalency to the traditional courses is ensured in new online study programmes. In the more immediate future I, and every other worker in the online education industry, has a certain responsibility to safeguard the reputation of online education and aid the advance towards general societal recognition of its value.

Best Practices Guide for Developing Hybrid Learning Training

In this guide I will look at 5 areas that should be considered of high importance when developing a hybrid learning instruction, with a particular focus on a scenario where a face-to-face course is in the process of being converted to a hybrid learning instruction. These five areas, if dealt with appropriately, will help increase the effectiveness of learning for distance education students.

  1. What is hybrid learning and what are its advantages?

An understanding of the benefits of, and theories behind, distance learning is important for anyone looking to develop distance learning instruction as it can inform their decisions about whether distance learning is indeed a suitable choice for the specific case and influence choices to be made in the design of the instruction. Hybrid learning (or blended learning) is distance learning that occurs when instruction is offered partly through traditional face-to-face learning and partly through distance learning. It is suggested that if up to 80% of the studies are delivered through distance learning with the remainder offered through traditional methods then hybrid learning takes place (Laureate Education, n.d.a). Distance learning means that ‘interactive telecommunications systems are used to connect learners, resources, and instructors’, so hybrid learning offers all parties the opportunity to partake in study without having to be physically present in the same space (Simonson et al., 2012, p.32).

Having a distance learning aspect to instruction can be preferable to solely face-to-face learning for various reasons. The biggest advantage with hybrid learning is that it offers a higher degree of flexibility to students and instructors. There are also other practical advantages for institutions offering courses where not all students are required on site at all times. If students partake in some parts of a study programme from a distance instead of requiring face-to-face instruction 100% of the time, ‘you don’t need to have as many classroom buildings, you don’t need have as many parking spots, you don’t need to have as many, maybe even, dorm rooms’ (Laureate Education, n.d.b). Finally, distance learning can, in and of itself, also be a very rewarding means of studying for many learners. Distance learning involves interaction between students and instructors, and for certain learners the type of interaction common to distance learning can greatly enhance their learning experience. Discussions online, for example, can help ‘people construct their own understanding by actively processing content in order to establish their own meaning’ (Stacy, 1999). Students can actively consider the materials they are studying and develop meaningful contributions to share with classmates. This kind of thinking on collaboration between students developing knowledge through cognitive tasks is termed constructivist theory. For adult learners in particular self-directed learning of this nature can be very effective (Knowles 2012).

  1. Equivalency Theory

Equivalency theory is a concept that every instructional designer for distance learning education should keep to the forefront of their minds at all stages of planning and development. The notion of Equivalency Theory dictates that studies at a distance should not be identical to face-to-face education but that ‘equivalent outcomes… should be expected of each learner’ (Simonson et al. 2012, p. 52). For cases such as described in the scenario for this week it is extremely relevant as their can sometime be a tendency to assume just making materials from face-to-face instruction directly available at a distance without any adjustments would be sufficient for effective instruction. Dr. Michael Simonson, in discussing equivalency theory and distance education, admits that the initial thought when converting a course to distance learning can be ‘let’s duplicate that class’, but goes on to explain that the idea of being able to have an identical class at a distance in this way is a ‘fallacy’ (Laureate Education, n.d.c). Courses need to be adapted for distance learning so that students can experience, not an identical, but an equivalent level of education to students who would study solely through a traditional medium. In a case like the scenario we considered for this week the instructional designer should focus on achieving equivalent learning outcomes for the students and not on trying to replicate what has been tried and failed in face-to-face instruction already.

  1. Learner Analysis and Orientation

Whether instruction is being developed for distance learning students or students studying in a traditional face-to-face setting, a vital part of planning for instructional design is learner analysis. Morrison et al. (2013) state that ‘it is essential… early in the plannign process, to give attention to the characteristics, abilities, and experiences of the learners- both as a group and as individuals’ (p52). An instructional designer should seek to gain as complete an understanding of the learners as a group and individuals as possible before starting the design of the distance learning course. My tip for a designer of distance learning studies would be to pay close attention to the ‘specific entry characteristics’ that would be necessary for a learner to effectively study through distance learning. Successful distance learners typically possess a certain set of attributes that make them suitable for the challenges of studying remotely. It can be an important step for an Instructional Designer to take into consideration whether or not the group of learners in question have the required skillset to take full advantage of distance learning studies, and if not then to take steps to rectify these shortcomings. Wang et al.’s (2008) research suggests that there are four key characteristics that distance learners need to be cultivate to improve their chances of success. These are: 1) the ability to adapt to self-directed learning, 2) learning strategies 3) self-efficacy and 4) learning motivation. To give an example of how learners can be helped develop desirable attributes before their study begins: students can be asked to take a short survey or quiz before the beginning of any design of instruction to gain an understanding of what possible weaknesses they have in any of these four areas, and then an orientation course can be put into place to help improve areas of perceived weakness.

  1. Plan carefully for student discussions

It has been posited that students of distance learning develop by engaging with coursework in three different ways: (1) learning from resource content like reading materials, recorded media etc., (2) interacting with their instructor and (3) interacting with other students. Anderson (2012) neatly explains this in a visual way by using this diagram:

Anderson elaborated further on the importance of student-student interaction by stating that ‘work on collaborative learning illustrates potential gains in cognitive learning tasks, as well as increasing completion rates and acquisition of critical social skills in education’ (p57). Thus, if a distance learning module is going to involve interaction between the students, through discussion boards, blog sharing, wikis or otherwise, the importance of interaction between students suggests that the instructional designer should be planning for effective implementation of this from very early on.

Students have their own responsibilities for ensuring that the standard of posting in distance-classroom forums is high. However, on the planning and implementation side of things the instructional designer and instructor also have a major role to play in the success of this key area of distance learning. Instructors need to be active members of the learning community. Dr. Piskurich has discussed how it is crucial that distance learning instructors get involved in all class discussions; this needs to be kept in mind by the designer and relayed clearly to instructors (Laureate Education, n.d.d). The instructional designer in this scenario and most other distance learning scenarios too, also need to set very clear expectations for what is expected of students in each discussion. For students to effectively be able to partake in a meaningful and focussed debate with other students it is crucial that the discussion questions ‘clearly define expectations… for each assignment’ (Durrington et al., 2006).

 

  1. Visual Appeal for Online Classes

One thing I have learned from developing my own instructional courses is that the visual appeal of the classroom and learning resources is critically important. If students are expected to spend time partaking in self-directed learning in the classroom, they need to be visually stimulated by the online environment. Having different types of media to learn from (so not just large amount of text to read), presenting the material in an attractive and user-friendly way, using pictures and diagrams to aid understanding of key issues are just some examples of how the visual appeal of online classrooms can be enhanced. It is a detail that can be easy to overlook but that can have an important positive impact on students’ study experience.

A Quick Look at Planning for Distance Learning in Open Courseware

This week I have been analysing Open Courseware websites and considering how much evidence of planning in the instructional design phase can be sensed. Open Courseware involves education institutes sharing course materials for public use (Simonson et al. 2012).  The example I used for reference is MIT’S Open Courseware.

MIT’s Open Courseware website is very easy to navigate and has very useful features to help you find a course that interests you for study. You can search by topic, sub-topics and specialties to find a suitable course. The course I looked at was a course studying Patents and Inventions. The course description explains that the course covers ‘the history of private and public rights in scientific discoveries and applied engineering, leading to the development of worldwide patent systems’. The course was taught originally by Dr. Robert Rines in autumn 2005.

The course on Patent and Inventions was a graduate programme taught through web-facilitated learning. There was one face-to-face lecture of 3 hours each every week. The course features an introduction video interview with the lecturer Dr. Rines, and he gives a useful run-down on how the instruction is offered. Readings for the studies were made available online and then the content was discussed and dealt with in the face-to-face lectures afterwards. Often, the face-to-face classes involved guest speakers from the world of Patents. Dr. Rines explains that the online part of the studies was important ‘to prepare the class for the materials… so that they understand it’ before the face-to-face tuition and guest speakers.

It was very interesting to hear Dr. Rines discuss his programme as he touched upon a number of issues that are at the very core of instructional design. For example, he stressed how learner analysis was instrumental in the development of the course. He explains that a lot of the course organisation ‘came from the students’ themselves, suggesting how they would like to learn, what kind of guest speakers they would like to hear from etc. This theme of course development was also driven by the fact that with changes in the Patents and Technology sector the course also needed to be changed with time. Simonson et al. (2012) are very clear on the importance that such continuous evaluation plays in effective instructional design, stating that ‘it is vital to determine what works and what need to be improved’ (p153). Dr. Rines explanation of how the course developed is a clear indication to me that the course was thoughtfully planned, evaluated and then re-evaluated over time.

Another important aspect of the course that I appreciated was that it very much encouraged active learning. The course was studied partly through distance and partly on campus, and in cases where distance learning is utilised it is imperative that the instruction ‘engage all the learners in active learning’ to keep students ‘in tune’ (Simsonson et al, 2012, p159). In a section of the course entitled ‘Course Pedagogy’ Dr. Rhines emphasises how important a role active learning plays in the Patents and Inventions programme. He writes the he ‘challenged [his] students to concern themselves with problem areas of their own personal interests, and to do original research anent to submitting analysis and thinking for class discussion’. The course assignments challenge students to think about the required readings they work through online with a view to contributing to discussions in the face-to-face part of the study. I believe there is evidence of planning for distance learning in this approach, as it keeps students engaged and learning actively, even when not physically being together or with the instructor. The final assessment for the course then took the form of a final project that the student would work on privately, develop with discussion in class and present to the class in the final week of study.

In conclusion, I was quite impressed with the instructional design of this MIT Open Courseware course. Obviously, the fact that students did meet on campus once a week made learner analysis more manageable, but the continuous development of the course taking into account student feedback was notable and praiseworthy. In addition, the encouragement of active learning and having a course planned with active learning in mind greatly increases the chances of the online resources and remote study being successful. I believe this is a good example of a well-designed wed-facilitated course.

Interactive Tours- A Distance Learning Technologies Scenario…

A high school history teacher, located on the west coast of the United States, wants to showcase to her students new exhibits being held at two prominent New York City museums. The teacher wants her students to take a “tour” of the museums and be able to interact with the museum curators, as well as see the art work on display. Afterward, the teacher would like to choose two pieces of artwork from each exhibit and have the students participate in a group critique of the individual work of art. As a novice of distance learning and distance learning technologies, the teacher turned to the school district’s instructional designer for assistance. In the role of the instructional designer, what distance learning technologies would you suggest the teacher use to provide the best learning experience for her students?

Distance education has been defined as ‘institution-based, formal education where the learning group is separated, and where interactive telecommunications systems are used to connect learners, resources, and instructors’ (Simonson et al., 2012, p.32). The example in question here specifically states that distance learning technologies need to be implemented. Thus, at least part of the learning experience in the interactive tour or group-work will need to be completed by students while they are not physically in the same place.

In this instructional design project we are not tasked with actually creating the content for delivery. Rather, our task is solely involved with suggesting which technologies should be used to effectively accomplish the virtual museum tour and subsequent group critique. Thus, while the first step in developing effective instruction- the analysis phase- usually involves a needs analysis and a task analysis, these parts of analysis will not be required here. The objectives for the instruction and the choice of tasks involved have already been settled on by the teacher in question. The analysis in this case will be centred on gaining an understanding of which distance learning technologies will be most suitable for this particular group of students. To do this our analysis will need to focus on learner analysis, and by this analysis we will be able to discern how to optimally use technology to support the learners ‘both as a group and as individuals’ (Morrison et al., 2013, p.52).

The learners in this case are high school history students. In this theoretical case we obviously don’t have the opportunity to conduct a full learner analysis on the class (for example, what age-group the students fall into, what their general academic standard is, what is their level of access to technology etc.) so some assumptions will need to be made on their learner characteristics. Huett et al. (2008) in their analysis of the use of online learning at high school level make the point that a number of psychological characteristics are required for distance learning to be successful, including autonomy and motivation. These attributes can vary at high school level, especially as ‘the development of many of these characteristics is age-dependent, raising the possibility that younger students may be less successful online learners’ (p. 64). In order to safeguard against the fact that fully online studies are highly unlikely to uniformly suit the learning characteristics of a whole class at high school level, I believe a web-facilitated distance learning class would be most appropriate. With this learning method the students can view the virtual tour material from distance in their own time, and then spend classroom time discussing what they have learnt and participating in the group critique of the artwork. This means students can take the virtual tour at their own pace, and the teacher, in turn, can spend less time in class working through the material and devote ‘more classroom time on individualized instruction’ (Defour, 2013).

I would recommend the use of CourseSites to the teacher for making virtual tour material available to students at a distance. CourseSites is a Course Management System that can be used to host a variety of materials and media online. Recorded video footage of the art work in the museums with accompanying commentary and explanations by museum curators can be uploaded to coursesites, and thus made available to students in their own time away from the classroom. Discussion board areas can also be utilised within CourseSites for students and the teacher to discuss any parts of the virtual tour remotely, although these discussions will also be held in the classroom. As explained above, it is unclear as to whether this particular group of high school students would have the characteristics required to make optimal use of online discussion boards. In my own personal experience, it is very difficult to motivate students of high school age to engage with this type of activity outside of the classroom, unless it is made a compulsory part of the course. As per Knowles et al. (2012), students who are not yet considered adult learners in terms of psychological development are often more motivated by external influences like grades and parental approval rather than internal pressures such as a desire for personal development and self-esteem. CourseSites has limitations in the amount of content that can be uploaded to each course (500mb), but for a single high school instructional programme this should certainly be sufficient. The platform is also free-to-use.

Using CourseSites as distance learning technology has been proven successful in high school environments in the past. The CourseSites website itself details the positive feedback a number of teachers at high school level have returned on the technology. Audrey Carmosino (n.d), for example, is a high school science teacher who has use CourseSites to ‘expand [her] in-class course into more of a hybrid format’. There are also advantages for students using CourseSites that extend beyond just being able to study remotely outside of the classroom: another high school who use blackboard (which has the same format and functionality as CourseSites), Carroll High School in Ohio, USA, note that offering instruction to students through this medium will be of benefit to them once they move into University. Blackboard and CourseSites are two very commonly used distance learning technologies at third level.

The different forms of distance learning…

This week I’m taking a closer look at the different forms of distance learning. There can sometimes, when considering distance learning, be a tendency to just focus on online learning. In the matrix of distance learning models below I examine online learning, blended/hybrid learning and web-facilitated learning, and consider the strengths and weaknesses of each method.

How much content is delivered online? Over 80% of the content is delivered online (Laureate Education, n.d.a). Content partly delivered online (up to %80) and partly delivered face-to-face (Laureate Education, n.d.a). This involves delivery of face-to-face content, but with the addition of utilizing ‘tools of [our] generation to accelerate learning’ and facilitate similar content remotely if desired (Converge, 2012, p.6). Web-facilitated courses do not use one of traditional or online course methods, or even use a hybrid strategy where some content is available remotely and some content available face-to-face. Rather, 100% of the content is delivered face-to-face and in combination with these traditional learning methods, learners can use technology to ‘review the lecture at their own convenience’ (Defour, 2013).
How much separation is there between the learner and the facilitator? The level of separation between learner and facilitator in online learning can be quite high and take many forms: geographical separation, separation in time in the case of asynchronous online education, intellectual separation etc. (Simonson et al (2012), p. 34). Due to the often diverse nature of online classrooms, differences in terms of background, culture and age can be an important factor of separation between the learners themselves that can be more pronounced than in other types of education. These cultural separations also ‘exist between

participants and teachers’ (Hannon & D’Netto, 2007, p.420)

Much the same separations are applicable to blended learning as are applicable to online learning. Blended learning does bridge the gap in geographical and time separations for at least a large chunk of instruction, however, during the face-to-face aspect of the delivery. Web-facilitated courses involve even less separation between the learner and the facilitator than distance and blended education. As explained above, web-facilitated learning is not meant to replace face-to-face learning with distance learning, but rather serve as an additional resource. Therefore, students would need to be in the same location and time as their instructors to attend the face-to-face delivered content.
In what ways is technology used with each model? 

 

Simonson’s (2012) definition of distance learning states that telecommunications systems are used to ‘connect learners, resources, and instructors’ (p. 32). These telecommunications might merely utilize postal correspondence, but may also involve more sophisticated technologies like the television broadcasts or streaming on the internet. Regardless of the type of technology used, the technology is utilized as the means to connect learners and instructors together, as per Simonson’s definition. Similar to distance learning, hybrid learning utilizes technology to connect learners and facilitators when they are not meeting face-to-face. In hybrid learning this connection of involved parties in a remote way through technology is not as constant as with distance learning as much of the instruction will be face-to-face.  Simonson (2012) mentions that hybrid learning can make use of technology in situations where there are ‘classroom shortages’ that make finding space for face-to-face instruction difficult, or in other situations where the instructor feels that activities where connection through technology occurs in place of face-to-face interaction will be more beneficial to the learning experience (p. 125). Technology is used as a supplement to traditional learning methods to help improve the learning experience. Defour (2013), in his article on ‘flipped classrooms’ (another term for web-facilitated learning) in Wisconsin, gives some good examples of how technology can benefit web-facilitated learning. Students can watch seminars or lectures in their own time so they can ‘can pause and review parts of lectures they don’t understand without stopping an entire class’ (ibid) and they can then use the time in class with their instructors to have a more personalized learning experience where individual problems or issues from the lecture are dealt with
Identify 2-3 pros for each model.  1) The key benefit of online learning is the flexibility it affords its students in terms of time and location. Online learning ‘knows no time zones, and location

and distance are not issues’ for its students, and similarly for instructors, ‘tutoring can be done anytime, anywhere’ (Anderson, 2008, p.17).

2) For educational institutions online learning can be an important revenue driver and means of continuing growth. Having online programmes available to students remote from a campus opens up a new potential student body. Moller (2008) observes that ‘For some institutions, even a

modest distance education program…

could mean the difference between

a budgetary surplus and a loss—especially for

tuition-driven instructional programs’ (p. 66).

1) Flexibility for the students is a benefit in hybrid/blended education. Students who are working and thus perhaps not able to travel to a particular location for study multiple times per week can have their travel requirements eased by a course that is partly offered at a distance.

2) As with online learning, there are also practical advantages for institutions to having courses where not all students are required on site at all times. Simonson points on that if students can take some classes at a distance instead of face-to-face 100% of the time, ‘you don’t need to have as many classroom buildings, you don’t need have as many parking spots, you don’t need to have as many, maybe even, dorm rooms’ (Laureate Education, n.d.b).

1) By enabling work on learning content in the learner’s own time web-facilitated learning encourages students to ‘work off each other and solve problems independently’ (Defour, 2013). To me, this seems to be a strength based on adrogogical assumptions of education. As learners mature, their needs for education can change. As per Knowles (2012), it has been noted that teaching becomes more effective when students are given more responsibility for their own studies, like in web-facilitated learning where learners can be involved with ‘choosing methods and resources’ for their instruction (Knowles, 2012, p. 69).

2) For instructors working with teenage or young-adult learners, using web-facilitated learning can be a way of engaging their students through media that are popular in their age demographic (e.g. Social media, new technologies etc.).

Identify 2-3 cons for each model. 1) Online programmes can sometimes be perceived to lack the same credibility as traditionally-taught programmes. Moller (2008) explains that there is still a certain ‘stigma’ attached to e-learning courses. (p. 68).

2) Online programmes can, when not designed correctly, be ineffective. These poorly designed programmes can end up emphasizing the ‘technology rather than the content and learning opportunities’. Well-designed online learning can, however, be expensive to have developed and implemented (Simonson et al. 2012, p. 126).

1) Hybrid-learning’s great strength of flexibility is, in some ways, undermined by the greater flexibility offered through online learning. Simonson notes that ‘more and more blended courses [are being] converted to an all-online format’ (Simonson et al. 2012, p. 125). Working professionals who study part-time through hybrid learning can remove the need to travel for face-to-face instruction at any time by studying fully online, and for institutions struggling with resources to offer face-to-face instruction, online learning can also be a more effective solution than blended courses.

2) As with online learning, it can be a challenge to correctly implement blended learning course. The challenge is not to merely use telecommunications to make a repository of materials and lectures available online, but to really develop a course where technology is used optimally. Courses offered through a blended format should be done so because they are ‘more productive learning experiences’ (Simonson et al. 2012, p. 125) than merely fully face-to-face learning, and not because they are an unfortunate requirement due to lack of facilities for traditional learning.

1) Many schools may not be ‘able to afford such a hardware investment’ as to provide each learner with a device to access material at school or at home (Converge, 2012, p.5) This could lead to an undesirable situation where web-facilitated learning can only really be optimally utilized by students wealthy enough to be able to take full advantage.

2) This method of study provides students with an opportunity to take more responsibility over their study and become more independent. However, for some learners this level of responsibility might be an impediment rather than an aid to learning. One teacher’s initial experience with web-facilitated learning, as recounted in Defour’s (2013) article was that students reacted to hearing they were to watch a lecture at home by concluding they ‘[didn’t] have any homework’.

What factors need to be considered when implementing each model?

 

The sometimes ill-perception of online learning in the academic community that is mentioned above has perhaps arisen due to the fact that, often, ‘the potential of electronic delivery

modes has not been fully realized in the implementation of online

courses’ (Anderson, 2008, p.306). Flawed implementations, such as the direct provision of face-to-face content through online means, do not make the most effective use of an online learning model and can damage the reputation of the online learning model. When implementing an online learning model Equivalency Theory should be kept firmly in mind. It states that studies at a distance should not be identical to face-to-face education but that ‘equivalent outcomes… should be expected of leach learner’ (Simonson et al. 2012, p. 52).

It needs to be kept in mind that online learning provides opportunities for students from widely varying backgrounds, nationalities and cultures to study together in an online classroom. Student from different culture will react to online learning differently and this needs to be considered when implementing online learning. For example, Hannon and D’Netto’s research has found that ‘learners from different cultural backgrounds differ in their

ability to work with online learning technologies’ (Hannon & D’Netto, 2007, p.428).

Blended learning, like online learning, needs to be developed and implemented skillfully and professionally. It should be developed with Equivalency Theory as a guiding principle, ensuring that traditional classes are not merely offered in an identical form but at a distance just for the sake of removing some delivery from a face-to-face environment. I believe the key factor to be considered when implementing web-facilitated learning is the learners that will utilize the learning. Learner analysis will be key in the design process to ensure that the instruction to be implemented is something that will benefit the specific individuals it is aimed at. Key considerations within this might include: the level of technology available in the institution, the base level of technology currently accessible to the students personally, the age of the students, the level of maturity of the learners in their approach to education etc.
Which model would best fit in your current organization or learning experience, and why? My work involves advising students on their enrolment into fully online third-level education. However, for education of the actual employees I work with (for example, on the specifics of a new online programme offered by the University) I believe web-facilitated learning would be most effective learning model. During working hours all the employees I work with are based in the same office, so availability for face-to-face learning could easily be arranged. Flexibility in this regard is not an issue. Offering web-facilitated learning would give employees an opportunity to gain a grasp of the content through online presentations before further face-to-face instruction occurs. This would then make the face-to-face instruction itself more effective. The target learners are all adult, working professionals and would have a strong motivation to understand the material to efficiently be able to perform their jobs. This is an ideal demographic for web-facilitated learning as it would ensure that both web-instruction and face-to-face instruction are taken seriously. Finally, the web instruction can be watched back in the future if any queries arise after training is finished.

Defining Distance Learning and Looking to its future…

Although my job for more than two years now has entailed working in a distance learning environment, this week marked the first time that I had the opportunity to study the topic academically in real depth. It was fascinating to begin to realise the limitations of my knowledge on the subject area that takes up so much of my daily life in every single working week, and, of course, to set about rectifying these shortcomings.

Up until this week, distance learning had two manifestations in my mind: correspondence learning and online learning. I had the vague notion that distance learning had set its roots in the relatively recent past with correspondence learning and then online learning had been developed from this into an alternative learning method. Correspondence learning, to me, entailed Universities delivering textbooks to remote-based students, and then tasking them with writing exams on these texts to be mailed back to the University so that they could be evaluated. Online learning was the type of distance learning I was most familiar with as it is the form of education I deal with every day in my work. If pressed I would have defined distance learning simply as studies carried out by an individual, either through correspondence learning or online learning, in a location physically removed from the educational institute offering the programme of study.

Simonson et al.’s (2012) definition of distance learning as ‘institution-based, formal education where the learning group is separated, and where interactive telecommunications systems are used to connect learners, resources, and instructors’ (p.32) did not seem, at first reading, to be too at-odds with how I initially considered distance education myself. However, further examination of Simonson et al.’s definition and a study of distance education’s history opened my eyes to the many forms that distance learning can take and enlightened me on my ignorance of distance learning’s long-reaching legacy.

The first revelation that really surprised me was that distance learning has been a factor in education since the 19th century. Simonson et al. mention that early evidence of distance learning being in operation dates back as far as Sweden in 1833 (p. 37). This education was provided through the post. Hearing this fact triggered a recent memory in my mind. I, quite recently, visited the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam, and read extracts from her famous diary detailing both her and her fellow clandestine housemates’ study of languages through the post. This recollection, more than anything else, was the most ground-breaking of my discoveries this week, as it made me consider for the very first time that examples of distance learning, the field of education I work in and should be very familiar with, have been visible to me on occasions past but due to the very narrow definition through which I considered distance learning, as stated above, I was unable to see these examples as such. Simonson et al. (2012) clarify that ‘telecommunications’ in their definition can, in fact, mean any kind of communication from a distance, regardless of whether the medium is electronic or otherwise (p.34).

My own definition of distance learning has certainly developed over the past week. Where before my idea of distance learning was quite rigid, I now see that distance learning can come in many shapes and forms and is not a new concept. As long as the study is organised (i.e. not merely self-study) and the learning body are not studying in the same place, you have distance learning. I would thus now seek to define distance learning, very simply, as ‘Education offered in a structured manner, studied by individuals who are not physically in the same place yet are connected to their instructor(s) by some form of communication’.

Looking to the future, I see distance learning’s development lying very much in the field of online study. As of now, online learning has already become ‘a popular choice for continuing professional education [and] mid-career degree programmes’ (Moller et al., 2008, p. 66), and online learning seems very much to be where the future of education lies. It is already quickly becoming a standard means of education with, as of 2013, 32% of third-level students in the US studying at least one course online and the number of students beginning online studies is continuing to rise year-on-year (Allen and Seaman, 2013, p.4). In Anderson (2008) it was predicted that ‘as the cost of hardware, software, and telecommunications declines, even developing countries can look forward to a future where access to the wealth of the world’s knowledge is commonplace’ (p. 160). The recent soaring popularity of massive open online courses (MOOCS) has made online education extremely accessible globally, and, echoing the Anderson prediction above has created the possibility of a ‘much higher standard of knowledge transmission worldwide’ (Stromquist and Monkman, 2014). I wrote above of ‘looking to the future’, it may well be, as per Anderson, that ‘the future has arrived’ (p.160).
